The Barrel Hive Removal
September 17, 2024
We first got the barrel hive from Mary Lee Gardens. We were contacted by them because the barrel was in the middle of their nursery and a hive of bees had made it their home. We picked up the barrel hive and it has been sitting in our bee yard ever since. However, it was time to finally open it up and see how that hive was doing and move them to a box, because we can’t manage the hive while they were in the barrel since they built their comb on the lid. If you want to see the process of opening up the beehive, check out The Beekeeper’s video on YouTube here.
We were able to harvest some honey during this process using the good ‘ol crush-and-strain method. It is a darker honey (since the barrel was not around cotton at first), so the pollen is from a variety of sources. We have a limited amount of the honey from this hive this season, so if you’d like some dark honey on your shelf, check out our store for the Barrel Hive Honey!
